Neighborhood Organizations

The neighborhoods of Windemere and The Fairways both have homeowner associations in addition to the Southwind Residential Property Association.  The Winderly neighborhood has an organized social network.

Garden Club

The love of gardening and horticulture brought together seven neighbors in 1992 who formed the Southwind Garden Club (SGC). Today, close to 50 neighbors meet monthly to socialize, learn more about horticulture, gardening, landscape, floral design and conservation. SGC is a member of the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

Projects within Southwind include seasonal plantings; spearheading recycling and conservation projects; initiating the yard of the month award; implementing a holiday lighting and decoration contests; and decorating the front and rear gates, as well as the TPC Clubhouse for the holiday season. Donated bronze statues honoring the children helped by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital grace the flower beds at the front and back gates. In addition, a bluebird trail was established on the golf course, which has been designated as an Audubon Society Wildlife Sanctuary.

The generous spirit of the Club doesn’t stop at the gates of Southwind. SGC is actively involved in a number of community activities throughout Shelby County and the State of Tennessee. Here are just a few ways they have contributed to the community:

  • Active maintenance of the Historic Garden at Chucalissa, a Native American archeological site predating European settlement of the area. SGC most recently established a Class I Arboretum at Chucalissa, which was dedicated in October 2008.
  • SGC funded and assisted in establishing a hydrangea flower bed at Memphis Botanic Garden.
  • SGC actively works to educate the community, including younger generations, about the importance of horticulture and conservation. Most recently, SGC began a project promoting conservation and gardening at Southwind Elementary School.
  • SGC initiated and participates in a state-wide project to provide funds for flowers for the Executive Residence in Nashville, home of Tennessee’s governor.

SGC membership meetings are held August through May on the third Monday of each month. Membership in SGC is open to all Southwind residents. Any current members may nominate interested residents for consideration.
